Janice Judy Babcook was a caring and loving wife, mother, sister, and friend. At the age of 64 years old, she passed away peacefully in Maple Ridge Hospital on October 20, 2024, after a very short battle with cancer.
Judy (the name she preferred) was born on November 9, 1959 in Vancouver. She was the 7th out of 10 children and the only one given up for adoption. She was adopted by her parents Rae and Allen Milner. She lost her father at a young age and was adopted again when her mother married Cecil Mante, whose daughter Debby became a beloved sister. As a family, they did missionary work in Taiwan during Judy’s teen years. Coming back to Canada after graduating in Taiwan, Judy devoted her life to caring and looking after children, whether it was babysitting, working in daycares or running her own daycare later in her life.
At 19 years of age, Judy met Barry Babcook, whom she married at Glad Tidings in Vancouver. She and Barry adopted their son, Anthony in 1989. The family then spent about five years in Taiwan, doing missionary work. During their time in Taiwan, they adopted their daughter, Sheri in 1992. Coming back to Canada in 1995, Judy and Barry pastored at a mission in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside until Barry’s death in 2014.
After her husband’s death, Judy closed her daycare and spent the rest of her life serving her Lord in different ways--in her church, in Celebrate Recovery, teaching children, and using her musical talents, whether it was singing or playing the piano on the church worship team.
Lovingly remembered by her son Anthony, daughter Sheri, brother-in-law John Ryan, nephew and niece, Benjamin and Priscilla Ryan.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held January 18, 2025 at 1:00 pm, at the Maple Ridge Community Church, 20450 Dewdney Trunk Road, Maple Ridge.

My deepest condolences to you, Sheri and Anthony. Although I did not know your Mom in depth, both her and your father Barry’s love for and effect on the lives of those who call the DTES their community will live on, forever. It has been my privilege to be part of the continuing operations of the Gospel Mission Society and have deeply cherished this opportunity. It has been life changing for me and I can only hope that my work there will continue the legacy that Judy and Barry have left!

Barry and Judy were precious friends of ours. They were a great help and suppport of our ministry to the Filipino community, when we started our church in 1993 to 1995 here in the Nanse Houjing area of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. We have precious memories of our two visits there in Vancouver in 2 1996, 2001. Debbie and I send our very sincere condolences, knowing that she is now with the Lord, in joyful reunion with Barry and other loved ones.
