It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Baird Dunbar (Bill). He was the beloved son of Bill and Nan Dunbar (both predeceased in 2002) and brother to his younger sibling, Marilyn (predeceased in 2011).
Bill was born on January 29, 1940, in Dumfries, Scotland. In 1956, at the age of 16, he emigrated with his family to Maple Ridge (Hammond), British Columbia, following his father’s new job.
Although Bill lived most of his life in Canada, he never lost his thick Scottish accent or his deep love for his homeland. Over the years, he travelled back and forth to Scotland many times to visit relatives.
Bill was a lovable curmudgeon with a big personality and an even bigger sense of humour. Whether it was a look or a quick retort, his comic timing was always impeccable.
His passions were politics and sports. Bill devoured the newspaper daily to keep up with current events and to follow his beloved Glasgow Rangers.
An avid soccer player and bowler, Bill was also a familiar sight around Maple Ridge—often seen riding his bike through town, to the Harold Johnson Centre, or to work.
Bill will be deeply missed by his niece Fiona (Ken), nephew Jim, brother-in-law Jim Sr., and great-nephews Alex, Ben, and Graeme (Gabby), as well as by his many relatives in Scotland.
“An honest man here lies at rest…
If there’s another world, he lives in bliss;
If there is none, he made the best of this.”
— Robert Burns

So sorry to hear of Bills passing. He was a cousin of my mum who passed away November 2024. Bill certainly had a good sense of humour and that is what I’ll remember most about him. We live in Dumfries Scotland & Bill visited a few times with Aunt Nan & Uncle Wullie. They stayed with Wullies brother, Doug & his wife Barbara who were my Nanny & Papa (my mums parents) my thoughts are with the remaining family x
