Auntie made us her family and her home our home. I loved her delicious cooking and always remember her welcome home kiss and "Beti kaisee hai? She was very loving. We introduced my future husband, Aurobindo to her before I could make any final decision and she fortunately gave us her blessing. You all helped so much in my wedding. Your family was my family from Fiji. My sincere condolences to Bobby, Roshni, Rekha and your families. We pray for strength and wonderful memories to sustain you.

My apologies for this late response in formulating an appropriate tribute!
How does one define "great" in the context of a Kaki's life?

Kaki's entire life was spent doing arduous work, fulfilling mundane daily household chores for the family.
There were periods when the family was extended such that there were more mouths to feed and house, on a daily basis.
Business operations required more drivers who became a mainstay, to be catered to.

In the early 1950's, Kaki and family moved to Vatukoula to manage the new business endeavor.
In addition to the existing Deluxe Bus Transport, a local taxi service opportunity presented itself.

Uncle Jagat (Jack) and family operated the first taxi service to the local community of employees of Emperor Gold Mines.
These employees of the Gold Mines were young Australians who were there with their young families, earning a living.
A taxi service was utterly viable for the business, and so the pioneer spirit in my Uncle Jack came to the fore.

Transporting the end product of the Gold Mines, that is to say, the GOLD, became a highlight of the business operation!
On demand, with no notice aforehand, a call would be received for this service.
Under armed police guard and two Emperor Gold Mines representatives, Uncle Jagat would be the driver, delivering the
gold to the airport in Nadi, for further shipment to Australia and beyond.

I am witness to one such fully occupied and loaded taxi departing Vatukoula for Nadi.
It was a fully loaded vehicle, one of our taxis, a sight indelibly etched in my mind for ever

As the favorite nephew that I was, I spent many school holidays in Vatukoula, with Kaki, Kaka, and family.
Christmas and New Year celebrations necessitated moving large numbers of people.
There was much work and business to do, transporting people during the busy period before Christmas.

The family home, was also the base of operations of the family's transport business.

She shouldered her part of the operation with great skill and adroitness, and satisfaction for everyone.
The new business was a challenge, and Kaki worked her heart out, keeping house, and constantly preparing
loads of delectable food items for everyone, including the business drivers and mechanics.

The climate in Vatukoula is usually very dry and very hot late into the night, for most of any year that I recall.
It remains for you to imagine the prevailing conditions under which Kaki proved herself.
Most of the work was hand work, no machinery! None!

My admiration for her tenacity and drive ranks way, way up there with the best!

Now, only sweet memories remain of my very dear and loving Kaki!

Peace forever at last!

Dearest Aunty,

My memories of you stretch back to the early sixties and you were our aunty from the start. I remember your delicious cooking and your lovely smile but my best memory of you was when my brother was getting married. You stashed some baby powder in your sari blouse during the mehendi ceremony and chose your moment well. You poured that powder all over my dad’s head. How we all laughed! It was a mischievous side of you we had never seen before and the delight on your face stays imprinted in my mind to this day.

You will always be a cherished memory for us. May you Rest In Peace.

Love,

Ragini

You have left a gaping hole in my heart but knowing you left on your terms makes it bearable.
You fought a good fight and at almost 97 years old , your body could not match your will to live.
Your doctor said you had 9 lives especially when you returned home after Covid and again 2 other times
.
Your grandchildren meant the world to you and you meant the same to them. You made it easy for us to be parents because you
always stepped up for baby sitting, You never wanted to be paid because it was your duty.
You did the same for all the other children you were baby sitting whether it was for a few days or weeks.
They all remember you with love

I will always remember the valuable life lessons you taught me. You were traditional and principled and did not waiver no matter what life threw at you. It amazes me that with a grade 3 education you accomplished so much.
One thing you said, "always buy a house with a basement so you can pay all the overheads." How true!

You gave so much of yourself to both sides of the family and to the numerous friends.
Those people who are here and those who are watching on line will remember you fondly.

May your atma rest in peace .

Love you, always
