Stephen John Goronzy passed away on 15 July, 2026 in Maple Ridge, BC at the age of 69.  Stephen had been in poor health the last few years with both respiratory and cardiac issues exacerbated by his ankylosing spondylitis.  The last 2 months he’d spent in hospital from a triple bout of pneumonia which unfortunately he never recovered from.  

Stephen was a retired member of the British Columbia Regiment, (Duke of Connaught’s Own).  In his last days he spoke fondly of his time spent in the military both here and in Edmonton.  His service included a UN tour in Egypt as well as many instructor positions across Canada.  In 2000 he became an intelligence officer and transfered to Edmonton to work in the Intelligence section there.  

Those who knew Steve know he was an avid reader, loving both history and animal stories.  He had a sharp and keen mind, and loved to play cards and board games.  His gaming extended to his hobby of painting military miniatures for his games.  Those who played with Steve know he loved to give you a good thrashing, and his witty banter was all part of the experience—leaving you laughing one moment and shaking your head the next. We will all miss the rousing games nights.  Steve also had a great love for cats which he inherited from his mother, Shelagh. His beautiful boy Licorice will live out his days with his brother.  

He will be missed by both his sons Richard and Stephen and older brother Darrell, who he resided with. He will be joining his beloved mother Shelagh Dugalo, who was very much his kindred spirit in both wit and “joie de vivre “ - 

A celebration of life will be held in Burnaby at the Hillside Place CoOp community building, 8400 Forest Grove Drive, on 30 August 2026 at 1 pm.  We hope you will join us and share any stories you have about Steve.
