Born August 6, 1931, in Calcutta, India.  Passed away October 5, 2026 in Maple Ridge, B.C.   Lionel is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bernice; his son Andrew (Nancy); and his grandson Adam (Ada). He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters Jennifer Hutchings and Audrey Turner, his brother Roger Browne, half‑brother Guy Consterdine (Margaret), sister‑in‑law Enid Hough (John), and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends across the UK, Spain, and Australia.

Lionel spent his early years in England. After serving in the RAF as an airframe mechanic, he began his career as a template maker in the steel industry. It was during this time that he met and married Bernice Routledge of Salford. In 1963, they emigrated to Toronto with their young son, beginning a new chapter in Canada. Lionel continued his work in steel fabrication, later moving to Edmonton, where he formed many lasting friendships through the church. In the mid‑1970s, he served as a superintendent on the Tar Sands project in Fort McMurray, overseeing the construction of the bucket‑wheel extraction machines. After the project’s completion, Lionel and Bernice settled in British Columbia in 1978.

Following various roles in British Columbia and in the North with Northwest Power Corporation, Lionel retired and devoted his time to helping others. He volunteered for several years in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside at Mission Possible, offering his time, compassion, and steady presence to those in need.

Lionel and Bernice later moved to a retirement community in Chilliwack, where they welcomed neighbours and friends into their home and patio. After Bernice’s dementia diagnosis, they relocated to Maple Ridge Seniors Village in 2015. They embraced the community there and made many friends. In 2017, Bernice moved over to full‑time care, where she continues to receive dedicated support from care aides, nurses, and staff.

A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, Lionel rediscovered his passion for riding in the 1990s, enjoying several bikes over the years. His final two‑wheeled companion when he was in his 80’s was a Yamaha scooter, which brought him great joy.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Maple Ridge Seniors Village, whose kindness and support were a great comfort to Lionel. They also wish to acknowledge the nurses and staff at Ridge Meadows Hospital for their thoughtful care during the final weeks and days of his life, with particular appreciation to Dr. Trinos and Nurse Precious.

A celebration of Lionel’s life, with light refreshments, will be held at Maple Ridge Seniors Village on Sunday October 25th at 2 p.m.
