Larry “Hilary” Styba passed away at 87 in Maple Ridge, BC…on March 22, 2026.
Born on the family homestead just north of Roblin Manitoba, on September 10, 1938. Larry attended the one-room Gleneden School, where most of his classmates were made up of his siblings.
Larry left the homestead in 1966 and followed his sisters, Eva and Emily out west to Vancouver, where he met his wife, Marilyn Rye and were wed in 1967.
Larry worked at the Western Canada Cordage Company (making those colourful, waxy ropes you buy today) eventually landing his forever job as a custodian for School District No. #42 in Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows, where he took care of the classrooms and the buildings until, he retired in 2000.
In 1969 Larry and Marilyn welcomed their only child Larry James “Jamie” Styba, and then in 1992 they welcomed their daughter in-law Rosemary (Vande Wetering), and in 2003 their beloved grand Daughter, Emily Styba, arrived, making them the proudest grandparents in the world.
Emily and Grandpa had a very special bond, inseparable most days, as he was her biggest supporter and fan driving her to and from school every day from Grade 1 to 12 to softball games and basketball games or even a little girl’s tea party.
Larry was a basketball fanatic and a staunch supporter of Pitt Meadows Senior Secondary School Marauder basketball program which Emily and Jamie are both alumni of.
Larry was a warm-hearted soul who would give you the shirt off his back, always willing to buy someone a warm meal. He was like a Shepard standing on top of the hill, overlooking his herd (family) watching and observing everyone seeing them smiling at family gatherings. He knew his work was done.
Larry is survived by; Son, Larry “Jamie” Styba (Rose), granddaughter Emily Styba, (Okanagan Falls B.C.), sister Marie Hurley (Kingston Ont), brothers -in-law Ken Rye (Pat) (Maple Ridge B.C.), Stan Radwanski (Roblin Man.) Sister in-law- Elizabeth Styba (Markham Ont.)
Larry is predeceased by his loving wife, Marilyn Styba; his parents Andrew & Anna Styba and his Mother-in-law Edith Rye.
Siblings: Betty Yakimishyn (Mervyn), Eva Bissonette (Dan Bissonette Sr.), Peter Styba (Annie), Emily Mysko (Peter Sr.) Mike Styba (Ethel), Dmetro Styba, Theresa Styba, Love Bugera (Bill), Adelarde “Mervyn” Styba (Wilna), Ross Hurley and Shirley Radwanski.
Larry’s sense of humour, dedication to others and utmost love for his family and friends will be missed physically but we will all have lasting memories of this remarkable father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend.

When I was a young boy playing in our childhood house, I remember looking up at the walls in absolute amazement. They were covered in Uncle Larry’s massive puzzles. Going over for visits to his house and seeing shelves upon shelves of finished books. To me those giant completed pictures and books weren't just puzzles or stories, they represented who Uncle Larry was. They showed his incredible patience, his quiet focus, and his ability to look at the pile of pieces and chapters and build something beautiful out of them. Uncle Larry tackled life the same way he tackled those, with dedication, persistence, and love.

Dear Jamie, Rose and Emily,
Deepest sympathy on the passing of your dear Dad and grandpa.
Uncle Larry was a quiet gentle giant. We will always remember him as a kind and thoughtful Uncle who cared deeply for his family. He was so proud of you all. Happiest on the sidelines. But always close by.

Great Uncle Larry was such a sweet, hard working, and stubborn soul— like most of the Styba clan. My heart breaks he's no longer here but my heart heals knowing he's at peace.

A very kind, generous quiet man.
I recently saw I quote and thought it described Larry perfectly!
The quietest person in the room is often the only one that sees things clearly.
He never had much to say but he knew everything that went on.
He will be forever be in our hearts.❤️❤️❤️
