Garwood “Mick” Andrew Rentz was received into the loving arms of Jesus on October 22, 2026, at the age of 91.

Mick was born April 24, 1935 in St. Boniface, Manitoba, to the parents of Emmanuel and Margaret Rentz. Mick attended Concordia College, Edmonton, and graduated from the Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri in 1960.

Mick and his wife Marlene Gehring met during their time at Concordia College, Edmonton, and wrote many letters during their long-distance relationship while Marlene taught in Michigan and Mick attended the Seminary in St. Louis. They married on July 2, 1960 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Stony Plain, Alberta.
He is survived by his four children, Wanda (Glen) Peters, Greg (Lori) Rentz, Teryl Pratley, Jill (Jim) Rowland; eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren, Courtney (Braden) Paul and Kyle (Ashley) Peters, and great grand children Leila and Bodhi; Micah, Matthew, and Morgan Rentz, and great grand daughters Elizabeth, Blythe and Wranglyn; Ryan and Tyler Pratley; Taylor, Garrett, and Bryce Rowland and Nadia Kushniryk.

Mick and Marlene served in various congregations in Surrey, Courtenay, Ladner, Quesnel, and Westbank, where they retired and lived for 28 years. In 2017, they moved to Langley to be closer to family. After Marlene’s passing shortly thereafter, Mick remained in Langley for 7 years followed by 2 years at Zion Park Manor in Cloverdale.

Mick and Marlene loved to travel, including Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Conventions, trips across Canada and through the south-eastern United States, Billy Graham Schools of Evangelism, multiple cruises, and 21 seasons in Palm Springs.

He will be cherished and remembered by his family and friends for his love of sports, participant and spectator. Hockey, Tennis, Volleyball, Table Tennis and Pool to name a few. Mick was also very talented musically, playing piano, guitar, and accordion. He taught all of his children how to play tennis and remained competitive into his late 70s.

His gift for sharing the love of Jesus wherever he went was his calling. Mick’s legacy of love for Jesus, serving others through the many congregations, and commitment and love for his family will shine brightly for eternity.

Our thanks go to the staff at Zion Park Manor for their compassionate care and to the many friends and family for their prayers and support.

Above all, our eternal praise be given to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ through whom Mick has entered by faith into his eternal rest and glory.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, a disease which has affected close family members of Mick. Also, Mick and Marlene were faithful supporters of Lutheran Church-Canada Missions.

A Memorial Service in Mick's honour will be held on November 21, 2026 at 2 p.m. at Hillside Christian Church, 5950 179 Street, Surrey, BC with reception to follow. If you are unable to attend in person, please join the family online at www.youtube.com/@youarehillside.

Dad you were one of a kind. I miss you so much already. What a blessing God extended your life and we could grow so close in these years. You taught me so much about life..about Jesus and how to be a confident woman. And the tennis lessons were great too. One day we will meet up again..but for now I hold onto all the precious memories. I love you Dad.
