1952 – 2026

It is with great sorrow that his family announces the death of Doug Sprout at Ridge Meadows Hospital in Maple Ridge at the age of 73. He is survived by Eileen, his loving wife of over 50 years, his children Brooke Leary (Paul), David Sprout (Tania), Erin Leary (John), their five beautiful grandchildren (Morgan, Christopher, Max, Paige and Dylan), as well as his sister Christine Smith (Graham), brothers Craig (Kathy) and Paul (Frances) and many nieces and nephews. The strength of his family connections is a tribute to a life well-lived, and he will be missed beyond words.

Doug was born and raised in Port Coquitlam, BC. He was a natural athlete, competing in his youth in bowling and baseball before committing to a life-long love of golf. He went on to earn a BA from SFU and his Chartered Accounting degree before joining Finning Ltd, where he worked for 30 years.  It was at SFU he met the love of his life, Eileen Caldwell, and in 1975 they married. This relationship would be the cornerstone of his life. As his career advanced, Doug moved from Vancouver to Edmonton, to Santiago, Chile and finally retired as Executive Vice President in the UK for Finning International. It is in this time he and Eileen became world travelers, seeking adventure in every corner of the globe.

Doug came home to Canada in time for the births of his first two grandsons and dedicated his retirement to his family. Doug lived a life of integrity, kindness, generosity, and a love of family. He had a drive for excellence in all things and strove to always do the right thing in both his personal life and career. He made the world a better place. The vacuum created by his loss will not be easily filled. There are no words to express how much he will be missed.

In accordance with Doug’s wishes, no service will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local hospice.

Doug, you were a great big brother to me, including me in sporting activities with your friends and always looking out for me. You cared deeply about family and I appreciate that you organized many memorable get-togethers over the years. I will always remember your goodness and generosity. Rest in peace Doug.

Dearest Sprout Family,

I got to know Doug and his family when his eldest daughter and I were roommates back in 2003.
Brooke’s dad was full of intelligence, integrity and dedicated much love as a family man. It has been an honour to have met and known him. He and his wife Eileen were always greatly hospitable and kind when you would visit their home and cabin. He lived a full, successful life both personally and professionally and has left a beautiful legacy behind. He will be deeply missed. Much love and comfort 💗🌹

Doug, your in my thoughts and dreams. We're kids. Playing road hockey, throwing the football, shooting basketball in the hoop Dad put up in our driveway. Sometimes we're bowling and I can see Mom and Dad watching. They were fun times. I wish I could have said goodbye. Paul

I remember the first time I call Mr Sprout by his first name. I must have been 15- 16. Dave egged me on to do it. I peaked my head arround the door in their newton home and said “hi Doug”. Doug swung his head around and gave me the best dad glare. “Hello Niall” was all he said. I called him Mr Sprout from then on. To the point he knew I was terrified of him in a good way. He played on it. Using it to make sure I sided with him while playing games.
Doug and Eileen always tested me like part of the family. This is truly a loss.

Rest in peace Mr Sprout
