The Other Angelika Brunner
April 28th, 2025

I am sad to hear of the passing of Angelika. I just found out when I searched for my own name to see what comes up on an internet search. I never met her, but I have a funny story, as my name is exactly the same as hers and for most of my life we apparently lived fairly near each other.

In the 1990s I had a long-distance boyfriend. When we first started dating he lost my phone number and had to use the White Pages to try to find me. He didn't know I wasn't listed, but he found Angie's name in the directory and thought it was me. He called her and started talking immediately as if he knew her and missed her. I think she wasn't sure who it was and didn't want to be rude by asking who it was. Anyway, they started chatting a bit and then I guess he become a bit too frisky in conversation which was when she realized she did not actually know this man calling her.

My boyfriend also became confused, and said, "Isn't this Angelika? Angelika Brunner, from Vancouver?" Of course she said "yes". He couldn't believe I was pretending to not know him. He was insistent she was the young woman he had started getting to know and described me. That's when she laughed out loud and said "No, that's definitely not me!" (I am quite a bit younger).

They had a really great laugh about the situation and apparently kept chatting for a few minutes anyway. My boyfriend and I managed to reconnect soon after and he told me the story. We thought it was hilarious -- and we thought it was lovely that Angie was such a good sport about it.

Well over the years I continued to get a few odd phone calls from people who thought I was her, and I'm sure she must have gotten a few more for me. Our name is not common in Canada, so it's no wonder people were sure there could be only one! LOL

I hope Angie's loved ones enjoy this story. Sending condolences to her family and friends. I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad to finally see the face of the infamous "Other Angelika Brunner" ! :)
