SZASZ, Julianna (Julika)
March 10, 1932 – March 10, 2018
Shortly after her daughters sang “Happy Birthday to You,” Julianna passed away at McKenney Creek Hospice following a fierce, year-long battle with cancer. Born in Hungary, Julianna immigrated to Canada with her husband, Istvan, during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. They graduated from the UBC Faculty of Forestry with their Sopron classmates and settled in Vancouver. After raising their family, they moved onto five acres in Maple Ridge where Julianna had room to showcase her love of gardening. Her dahlias, geraniums and pole beans were widely renowned, filling the garden with bright reds and yellows from spring until late fall. Most of all, though, Julianna valued her family and friends. She cast warm sunshine on everyone she met, immediately making them claim her as their own. Pre-deceased by her husband of 56 years and son-in-law, Brian, Julianna will be deeply missed by her two daughters Julia (Mike) Palahicky; and Rita Rock; four grandchildren, Stephen (Heather), Shane (Jessica), Jill (Tim), and Olivia; six great-grandchildren, Andrew, Elizabeth, John, Michael, Robert and Charlie. Funeral Service Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Hungary Church – 1810 East 7th Ave., Vancouver, BC.
