It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Mae Gormley, late of Maple Ridge, BC from complications of a stroke suffered in October 2021.

Born in Cupar, Saskatchewan to Eric and Laura Davey (nee Hunt), Mae spent her preschool years on the prairies but the family had moved to Burnaby by the time she attended school and where her brother Dennis was born.  Mae attended Douglas Road Elementary and graduated from Burnaby South High School in 1953. During her school years, her favourite activities were sewing, choir and photography. The next couple of years were spent working at BC Telephone and spending winter weekends skiing with friends on Grouse Mountain and summer weekends with the same friends on Bowen Island.

In 1956 at a community dance in Pitt Meadows, she met her future husband, a handsome, young immigrant from Ireland.  On Boxing Day in 1957 Mae and Kevin Gormley were married. Together they built their lives and raised three children on their rural property in Whonnock.  Mae enjoyed being around people which was apparent in her work and hobbies.  She joined in choirs, worked in retail at Photo Express for many years and when her exceptional skills as a seamstress turned into a passion for quilting, she spent a few years working and teaching quilting at Elizabeth’s Quilters Quarters.  Mae was a founding member of the Ridge Meadows Quilters’ Guild and was a proud member of the Thimblebugs.

Predeceased by her youngest daughter, Colleen Findlay in 2002 and her husband Kevin in 2015, Mae is survived by her son Terry and daughter Kathleen; grandchildren Ross (Mia), Shayne (Jenna) and Shannon (Steffan) along with their father, son-in-law Jim Findlay; and great grandchildren Tynan, Ewan, Jamie, Elisabeth and Madeline. She is also survived by her brother Dennis (Pam) Davey in Kelowna, niece Tanis in Whitehorse, nephew Chad (Peggy) in Victoria and their families; along with Kevin’s extended family in Ireland and England.

A special thank you to all of the staff and caregivers at Maple Ridge Seniors Village who cared for and assisted Mom these last few years.

To honour Mae, a Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2023.  Expressions of sympathy, remembrances of Mae or requests for information about the Celebration of Life may be sent to maegormleymemorial@gmail.com.

Mae was my big sister who was always looking out for me, her little brother, while we were in school together. I had no problems with bullies thanks to her. Will miss her!

Our sympathy goes out to all members of Mae’s family. Though Mae was closer in age to my Brother Bruce she took the time to show me some attention at all the Davey family reunions going back to when we were kids. I wish I had seen her more often over the years.

Much love to you all. Keith & Sharleen Davey
