Andrew Thomas Hyland, “Andy” to all who knew him, was born May 7, 1931, in Dublin Ireland. Andy immigrated to Canada in 1954, making his way west to Ocean Falls, BC, where he worked in the pulp and paper mill.

Andy met the love of his life, Joan, in 1969 while on a trip home to Ireland. They married later that year and moved to Kitimat where Andy began work at the newly built Eurocan Pulp and Paper mill. Andy and Joan retired in 1994 and moved to Comox, and later to Maple Ridge in 2009 to be closer to their grandkids.

Andy passed away peacefully on April 4, 2024 surrounded by those who loved him. He was pre-deceased by Joan (2021), and his seven sisters. He is survived by his two sons, Paul (Jennifer, Brendan and Laina) and David (Katherine) and many nephews and nieces who affectionately knew him as “Uncle Andy”.

In his final days Andy imparted to us, “don’t sweat the small stuff, realize you don’t control everything, and live your life fully, you only get one shot at it”.

The Hyland family would like to thank the staff at Greystone Manor for making Andy and Joan’s last year's so amazing, and to the staff at Ridge Meadows Hospital and McKenney Creek Hospice for their amazing care of Andy.

Andy was a warm, kind and engaging Uncle, always willing to help. I'll always remember him as the Uncle who brought us toys to Ireland from Canada, most of which couldn't be got in Ireland. Thus we were one of the first to have a frisbee, a slinky and nutty putty in Ireland. RIP

Andy was one of the most entertaining individuals I ever met. He will be remembered by many former Ocean Fallers' including myself. It was a pleasure to have known him.

Andy was the the perfect son brother friend and to me the perfect brother in law. Always helpful cheerful and never less than gentle. Our regular telephone calls linked me with this incredible man in a very special way and always left me smiling. His immortality is assured if we follow his advice passed on by Paul. "don't swat the small stuff" Rest in peace Andy
