William (Bill) John Hanula of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia
(and formerly of Brandon, Manitoba and of Toronto and
Wingham, Ontario) passed away on March 19, 2021, in his
91st year, after a brief illness. Bill, a retired businessman,
who had studied business in both Manitoba and Ontario,
was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather,
brother, and a friend to many. He is survived
by his wife Shirley of 64 years; his daughters Linda (James),
Deborah (Michael), Judith (Brian) and Sheryl; his grandchildren
Sarah, Nathaniel, Aura, Ryan, Andrea and Christopher; his great-granddaughter
Sophia; brother Morris (Julie) and his brother-in-law Leonard (Odette);
and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by four siblings.
Throughout his life, Bill was an avid sportsman, both player and viewer. While he
was a youth living in Brandon, Manitoba, he excelled at baseball and hockey. (He
was also quite the adventurer, hopping the trains to travel west to Vancouver Island
for work and exploring Mexico by car with a friend.) In Ontario and later in British
Columbia, he became an active member of both curling and golf clubs, taking on
various roles: playing, leading, organizing, teaching, and building. He loved to curl
and to golf and made many friends through his participation in these sports. After
he retired, he enjoyed meeting them a couple of times each week for morning coffee
and conversation. He was lucky to be able to participate in these sports, still winning
tournaments, trophies and medals, well into his late eighties.
Bill was an active member of the Wingham chapter of the Kinsmen club. He was a
precise draftsman, carpenter and builder. He was also an energetic and skilled dancer.
He and Shirley tore up the dance floor with their quick steps, smooth moves, and high
energy on any available occasion. Crowds would part to watch the two of them dance!
While living in Wingham, Bill grew his own grapes, made his own wine, and, along
with his wife and children, created and tended to a huge vegetable garden each year.
Bill’s unconditional love for, and support of, his children and their offspring was
priceless. His athleticism, intelligence, sense of humour, positivity, natural leadership,
loyalty, tenacity, hard work and friendly demeanour endeared him to many. His
kindness, willingness to help, generosity and beautiful soul shone through his bright
smile. He will be sorely missed by all who loved him.
The family would like to thank Dr. K. Sommi for his kind, caring and comforting
medical attention.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made on behalf of William (Bill)
Hanula to the Golden Ears Winter Club – Juniors Curling, Maple Ridge.
