LYONS, Matilda Sylvia, named after her mother and grandmother and affectionately called Tilly by those who knew her. Tilly passed away peacefully on January 21, 2020 at Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody surrounded by her loving family.
Tilly was born October 17, 1930 in London, England. The eldest of two daughters of Frederick and Matilda Lyons. Tilly was one of the many children evacuated during the Second World War first to Sussex then Wales where she stayed until her return to London at the age of 15.
Tilly hitchhiked across Europe twice with her sister and a close friend when she was 22 years old. The first time they went from Calais to South of France, and the second time from Calais to Lucerne Switzerland.
In 1957 Tilly immigrated to Canada and began working at Rowntree’s in Vancouver. She stayed with Rowntree until 1962 when she accepted a position at EATONS in the Sales Audit office. Tilly stayed with EATONS until her retirement in 1993.
In the late 50’s while Tilly was inhospital she met the love of her life, Cliff Albers who sadly passed three weeks before their wedding. Tilly never married but stayed very close to Cliff’s family.
Tilly was like a second Mum to her three nieces (Kim, Mandy and Janice). When her sister Jean and family immigrated to Canada in December 1968 Tilly moved in and lived with them until her passing.
Tilly had a number of interests including gardening, collecting Royal Doulton figurines, lawn bowling, and embroidery. She also loved music and was a big fan of musicals.
Tilly is survived by her sister Jean Baldry (Dave deceased), Kim Heberlein (Dave), Mandy Brock (Peter), and Janice Baldry (Douglas), and their children Katie (Steve), Graeme (Kristie), Hayley (Nate), Holton (Jamie), Zoë (Alex), Hero (Connor), Dylan, and Kayla, and relatives in Canada and England.
A private service will be held for family at Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel at a later date.
