We are sad to share the passing of Joan Shain, at home, on September 20, 2021.
Joan was born in Hanover, Germany on April 19, 1953. The daughter of James and Winnifred Taylor, she grew up in a military family who traveled to Saudi Arabia and
She was married in the 1970’s and enjoyed crafts, cooking and gardening. Joan suffered a major disappointment as a young adult when she discovered she couldn’t have children.
Joan was adventurous, owning and living aboard a converted life boat, and later owning an old fishing boat. Although she left school early, she was able to own six different properties throughout her life, and recently renovated her home in Maple Ridge.
In 2004, she passed a course in Early Childhood Education with top marks. Later on, Joan became interested in alternative house construction and went to cob-house and tiny house workshops. She was a positive spirit. Researching many topics was a hobby of hers and had plans for her next house. She was a firm believer in eating organic foods.
Joan provided a safe, loving home for her two cats, who lived a long and happy life. Later, she had two small dogs that lived into their senior years.
She was friendly and upbeat and will be missed by many, including her brother, Stephen, and her friend John.
Memorial donations in Joan’s name can be given to the SPCA
