Mary Vlahac (nee Mitrovka)
Sept 3, 1925 - Oct 6, 2018. With heartbreak we announce our treasured Mary has left us to explore new worlds with her boundless curiosity. Born in Slovakia to Marta and Jurko Mitrovka, Mary came to Canada at age 9 in 1934. First, the family lived in Eustis, Quebec, before moving to Coloniale Avenue in Montreal. Mary sang in the choir for the Church of All Nations and remained close to her Slovak roots, yet always was interested in every culture. She met her husband, John Vlahac, and had a long, deeply loving, always entertaining, banter-filled marriage that saw them on many adventures. In 1970, they made North Vancouver their home. Partners in work and play, they square danced, traveled often, and stopped their trailer frequently in Arizona and Nevada, making friends everywhere. They proudly raised 2 daughters and welcomed 3 adored and adoring grandchildren. Mary remained active and vital all her life, interested in everything and everyone. Fiercely proud of her friends and family, Mary had a heart of gold and an unparalleled honesty that she said sometimes "got her in trouble". But that's what everyone loved.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband John, whom she missed every day, brothers-in-law Tony Kostovchik and Joe Vlahac, sisters-in-law Gloria Mitrovka and Mary Vlahac, and niece Tanja Vlahac.
She is survived and deeply missed by her devoted daughters Barbara Cox (Ken) and Helen Bond (Bruce), and 3 cherished grandchildren: Larissa Cox, Jared Bond, and Jesse Bond. She is survived by her beloved siblings Bill Mitrovka and Sonja Mitrovka, and sister-in-law Helen Kostovchik. Will be forever missed and remembered by goddaughter/niece Tara Mitrovka and nieces Laura Thomson, Lynda Kostovchik Quirino, Christine Kostovchik Bourgeois, and Wanda Vlahac, and nephew Bob Thomson.
Your wonderful spirit will always remain.
